Marianjoy Scholarship Program awards over $50,000 to Students with Disabilities

June 8, 2012 (Wheaton, IL) – For the past 18 years, Marianjoy has held a special event honoring and awarding scholarships to college students who have a disability. In June, the Marianjoy Scholarship Program awarded $55,000 to 22 students from the Chicagoland area, seven of whom were former Marianjoy patients.

According to John Wallerius, Vice Chairman of the Marianjoy Foundation Board and scholarship donor, “For these students, going to college takes extraordinary courage, dedication, and hard work—and with the help
of our donors they are able to pursue their education and career goals. You can see how much your donation really makes a difference when you attend this event.” Scholarship recipient Matt Wilcox reflects that sentiment: “Receiving the scholarship meant a lot to me. It inspired me to push harder, knowing people are counting on me to succeed.”

“We received 75 applications this year—the most ever,” says Jim Decker, head of the Marianjoy Scholarship Program. Each recipient received $2,500 and all 22 recipients were sponsored by donor families or groups.
A grant of $25,000 was graciously contributed by the Wheaton Franciscan Clara Pfaender Fund, aiding those students who are pursuing a healthcare-related career.

Since its inception, the Marianjoy Scholarship Program has awarded over $640,000 in scholarships. This support was made possible through generous donors, including community leaders, grateful patients,
family members, the Marianjoy Auxiliary, associates and physicians. The long-term goal of the program is to create an endowment to support the scholarships in perpetuity. In addition to the Bruce and Jo Ann
Schurman Endowment, other endowed support has been contributed by Will Gillett, Don and Cay Fischer, and the Hilb family.
