Marianjoy to Offer Series of Classes as Part of
American Heart Month

WHEATON, Ill. – In February, Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital is offering a four-week series, Matters of the Heart, in recognition of American Heart Month. These presentations are designed to encourage individuals to take action in improving their health and well-being, specifically as it relates to their heart.

“At Marianjoy, we are experts at treating individuals who have experienced an injury or illness and require rehabilitation. At the same time, we are also about prevention and helping individuals lead healthy lives,” states Sally Strong, Marianjoy Clinical Nurse Specialist, one of the presenters in the series. “Approximately 600,000 individuals in the U.S. die from heart disease each year. Poor heart health can lead to more serious issues like a heart attack, heart disease, or even a stroke. But there are ways to avoid these potentially devastating situations, and we hope to educate the community on how to do just that.”

The classes in this four-week series are taught by the clinical staff at Marianjoy. Topics for the series include:

Listen to Your Heart—A Woman’s Guide to Heart Health,
which will give participants new tools for managing physical, emotional and spiritual health effectively;

Heart and Soul,
a presentation on reducing stress through meditation, purposeful breathing, and calming exercises;

Heart Essentials—Understanding Your Blood Pressure and Blood Pressure Medications,
which will explain how to identify your risk factors; the consequences of not controlling your blood pressure; and the variety of blood pressure medications available, their purpose, and side effects;

Family and Friends CPR,
which will include instruction on CPR for adults, children, and infants, as well as techniques to save someone who is choking.

All classes are offered free, with the exception of Family and Friends CPR, which is offered at a cost of $15 per person. Classes will take place on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. throughout the month of February. Individuals may choose to attend one or all four classes.
