Pain management
Patients enter Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital’s pain program with various symptoms, which may include:
- Disrupted sleep-wake cycles
- Inability to fulfill work or social obligations
- Strained interpersonal relationships
- Self-esteem problems
- Distorted body image
- Significant functional limitations
Our Integrative Pain Treatment Center offers a 21-day program that focuses on helping people manage chronic pain so they can be restored to a lifestyle of comfortable function and mobility. The program is designed for people who are willing to accept a “management” instead of a “curative” philosophy for chronic pain. Ultimately, we aim to help people:
- Build confidence by returning control to the patient
- Increase productivity and function for the patient
- Cultivate lifestyle behaviors that promote wellness
- Restore physical activity (given abilities) and improve self image
- Achieve balance and control over medications
- Improve overall health – as untreated pain may lead to other medical conditions
One of the key features of our program is using a holistic approach to focus on the patient’s personal goals. Each patient admitted for care is assigned an integrated care team made up of physicians, specially trained therapists and nurses, as well as psychologists, nutritionists and spiritual care counselors. The team works in coordination with the patient and family to evaluate not only the patient’s pain, but also the impact that the pain has on the whole person – body, mind and spirit.
Patients are often diagnosed with:
- Lower back pain
- Biomechanical spine pain
- Muscle pain (myofascial pain and fibromyalgia)
- Neuropathic pain (pain in the nerves)
- Chronic headaches
Improving outcomes for a fulfilling future
Our integrated approach aims to improve the mind, body and spirit and to do this, we use one or more of the following methods:
- Biofeedback
- Medication management
- Stress management
- Physical therapy and fitness
- Soft tissue mobilization
- Passive and active stretching, strengthening and low-impact aerobics
- Manual medicine
- Relaxation techniques
Patient Outcomes
Eighty-three percent (83%) of patients perceived that their pain had less of an impact in their life. This includes family and marital functioning, work, social/recreational activities and satisfaction with their present level of functioning.
Seventy-two percent (72%) of patients experienced improvement in General Activity. This includes activities such as household chores, outdoor work, activities away from home and social activities.

Treating the individual with non-chronic pain
We also understand that not every person experiences disabling chronic pain, but they too can learn to manage their condition and improve their lives.
To meet this need, our Integrative Pain Treatment Center offers single-service therapies on an outpatient basis for people with acute or subacute pain, either at our Oakbrook Terrace facility or our main campus in Wheaton.

Referral process
If you think you may be a candidate for our program, you may schedule an appointment with a physiatrist in the Marianjoy Medical Group in Oakbrook Terrace by calling 630-909-6500. After completing a comprehensive pain evaluation, the doctor will determine which level of care is best suited for you and will write a prescription for the services you need.
Once we verify insurance coverage and you meet any predetermination requirements of your insurance company, you will be authorized to enter the program.
We encourage you to ask your insurance provider about benefits coverage for physical therapy, psychology, biofeedback and vocational counseling (if appropriate) in case you need those services as part of your rehabilitation. All those services are available in the Integrative Pain Treatment Center.
