Elective Rotation Information
Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital invites 4th year medical students from both allopathic (traditional) and osteopathic medical schools who are interested in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) to participate in elective rotations. The purpose of this elective is to familiarize the student with a broad-based physical medicine and rehabilitation service.
This elective will provide a fundamental knowledge of the principles of PM&R through patient care and didactic discussion. The student will have exposure to a broad range of adult patients (pediatric experience is available upon request) with acute and chronic musculoskeletal and neurological diseases. Both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation will be covered. Such diagnoses as stroke, spinal cord injury, head injury, and orthopedic/musculoskeletal/amputee rehabilitation will be managed in a multidisciplinary setting.
The student will interact with the multidisciplinary rehabilitation team, which includes attending and resident physicians, physical and occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, social workers, and rehabilitation nurse specialists. Students interact with all members of the rehabilitation team and observe in the therapy gyms a variety of specialized rehabilitation techniques. Students begin to develop the necessary skills to effectively manage the inpatient rehabilitation programs of persons recovering from a variety of illnesses. A didactics program is held weekly on Thursday which students are expected to attend in order to foster their medical education.
