Marianjoy is dedicated to helping our patients regain as much independence and functionality in their lives as possible, and for some people that means getting back to the game of golf. For others, recreational golf is a motivator and a more enjoyable way to develop or maintain flexibility and range of motion. Whatever the motivation, Marianjoy’s Therapeutic Golf Program was developed to help people who have physical disabilities learn to enjoy the game.
Golf has many therapeutic benefits including:
Recreational therapists and golf professionals work with individuals who have various physical disabilities to help them advance their play. They do this by suggesting modifications to swing and stance, and exploring adaptive equipment such as raised tees or special gloves that can make the game easier. For people in wheelchairs, our team teaches how to play from single-rider golf carts.
The Marianjoy Therapeutic Golf Program is open to golfers of all ability levels and is designed to help each person improve at their own pace. Instruction is tailored to meet each person’s unique needs.
The program begins with monthly golf clinics that are held at area golf facilities and courses.
The program also offers short and regulation play events, an annual tournament and educational seminars. Course play events are offered during the spring and summer.
Our program serves as a national resource for information on adapted golf equipment including customized gloves, clubs, tees and single-rider golf carts.
The program also works with golf course owners and operators not only to encourage people with disabilities to play golf, but also to expand accessibility to their facilities to people with disabilities.
