Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation

Acute inpatient rehabilitation at Marianjoy couples intensive therapy with high levels of medical and nursing care to help patients regain as much independence and function as possible. Research shows that the sooner patients begin a comprehensive rehabilitation program, the more significant their gains may be—preventing a new challenge from turning into a long-term disability, as well as increasing the chance for patients to rejoin the community.

Patients experiencing certain disabilities, illnesses or injuries frequently experience changes in physical function and mobility; speech and cognition; behavior and emotions; and personal independence. At Marianjoy, a physiatrist—a physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation—guides the care team, patient, and family/caregivers to optimize recovery and assist with return to home, work, school, sports and other activities of life.

Criteria for Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Admission

Inpatient acute rehabilitation is not for everyone, and all rehabilitation hospitals must follow admission criteria outlined by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). These rules are designed to assess patients can demonstrate the medical necessity required for intensive inpatient rehabilitation. Patients seeking admission for this level of care must:

  • Require two or more modalities of therapy (e.g., physical, speech, occupational)
  • Require 24-hour medical/nursing care with daily oversight of a physiatrist
  • Have the capacity to make functional improvements based on the rehabilitation goals set with the therapy team
  • Have approval of a physiatrist documenting their medical necessity and compliance with the other admission criteria
