Course Description

After a neurological insult, up to 90% of survivors experience visual deficits that can impact their ability to engage in daily activities. This introductory level course will provide learners with skills to complete an appropriate vision assessment that is based on the Mary Warren Hierarchical Model of Visual Perceptual Skills.

Attendees will learn easy-to-implement ideas for structuring daily interventions to address visual deficits, and the course will also provide an overview of assistive technology for addressing vision deficits. The course will review concepts related to basic assessment of the vestibular system to provide attendees with screening options to identify vestibular deficits that may be compounding visual deficits and further limiting therapy participation.

This live in-person course will engage learners in hands-on lab sessions to assist with carryover of assessment skills and to develop intervention ideas that can be easily implemented across all rehabilitation settings.

Course Description

This two-day course will provide therapists various treatment ideas to improve function for patients with neurological deficits. A framework for therapy intervention will be reviewed, stressing the importance of neuroplasticity and the research supporting it. Starting at the trunk, treatments will be delineated providing original intervention strategies to improve upper (hemiplegic shoulder) and lower extremity (gait) movement.

Additionally, this course will focus on ways to integrate motor learning strategies, while challenging patients to their appropriate physical level. This will include challenges for balance, aerobic conditioning, functional activities, as well as strengthening with an emphasis on providing appropriate adjustments to intervention programs for all settings.

Videos of actual patient cases will be used throughout the lecture material. Hands-on lab time throughout both days will provide opportunities for putting the approaches into practice. In addition, an actual patient will perform functional activities and the class will assist with appropriate assessment and designing an intervention plan.
